Hæðirnar is located in the Mývatn region of northern Iceland, where the landscape is marked by a mix of unique volcanic features and lush ecosystems. The design emphasizes a strong connection to this environment, creating spaces meant for both public use and administrative functions. The aim of Hæðirnar is to blend with the natural surroundings while providing an inviting experience for visitors. By tucking the structure into the hills, it minimizes any disruptive impact on the scenic beauty of the area.

Concept and Design Approach

The concept behind Hæðirnar focuses on embedding the building within the terrain. This approach leads to a design that complements the existing topography. Careful consideration is given to how light enters the structure, with openings created to frame views of Lake Mývatn. As a result, the building maintains a dialogue with the landscape, allowing occupants to feel connected to the environment surrounding them.

Functional Layout

The layout features two main sections: a Visitor Center and Coffee Shop, and an Administration Building. The Visitor Center is designed to accommodate about 200 people, welcoming visitors as they arrive from the access road. It not only offers practical amenities but also emphasizes visual engagement with the lake. The smaller Administration Building supports the essential functions needed for the operation and management of the site while also directing attention toward the Hverfjall volcano. This thoughtful division of space facilitates an efficient experience for both visitors and staff.

Materials and Construction

Concrete shells form the primary structure, ensuring stability and insulation. These materials aid in creating an exterior appearance that aligns well with the natural environment, reinforced by gravel finishes that blend with the ground. Inside, wooden paneling adds warmth, making the interior spaces more inviting, especially during the cold winters. Rooftops are designed for accessibility, serving as platforms to observe the diverse wildlife and views of the Mývatn region.

Design Details

The careful arrangement of spaces supports both functionality and a sense of wonder. Each aspect of Hæðirnar's design aims to enhance interaction with the landscape while providing essential services. The accessible roofs allow more than just a view; they create a platform for engagement with the area’s unique ecological significance. Attention to these elements offers visitors a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty that defines this remarkable setting.
