Community Hub Featuring Cross-Laminated Timber and Stone Integration

Project in-detail

Cross-laminated timber and stone materials create a community hub designed to facilitate engagement and resource exchange while providing essential spaces for meetings, activities, and sustainability initiatives.
5 key facts about this project
01
Cross-laminated timber structure enhances sustainability through carbon absorption.
02
Integration of stone materials grounds the building in its natural landscape.
03
Design includes dedicated zones for recycling and resource exchange.
04
Dual-level layout facilitates varied community functions and interactions.
05
Strategic placement of windows maximizes natural light and landscape views.

The Mývatn community house is located in an area defined by the geological features of Mývatn, Iceland. Designed to foster interaction among residents, the building serves multiple functions, from resource management to communal gatherings. The overall concept revolves around two main axes that dictate both shape and layout, enhancing accessibility and the experience of the occupants.

Design Concept

Two axes shape the design: one leads from the site to Skútustaðagígar, encouraging outdoor activities, while the other connects to Hverfjall, a notable nearby landmark. This dual orientation allows for clear divisions of space. The ground floor features areas for recycling, garbage collection, and secondhand resource exchange. The upper floor focuses on community needs, offering spaces for meetings, nursing, and planting activities.

Spatial Organization

The layout consists of interlinked but separate masses that facilitate movement throughout the building. This arrangement promotes interaction among users and creates varied spatial experiences. Natural light and ventilation are prioritized, allowing the interiors to feel open and inviting. Views of the surrounding landscape are carefully integrated, enhancing the connection between the building and its environment.

Material Selection

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is the primary material employed in construction. It is chosen for its sustainability benefits, such as capturing carbon dioxide and generating minimal waste. Stone materials are also included at the interface between the building and the ground, helping to firmly establish the structure within its setting while contributing to its overall visual appeal.

Functional Areas

The community house includes several designated spaces, such as a multipurpose community room, kids zone, public area, and shared greenhouse. Each part serves specific functions that encourage engagement among community members. This thoughtful arrangement ensures the building can adapt to various needs, making it a resource for all.

Through its design, the Mývatn community house blends functionality with a focus on community. The configuration supports both individual and collective activities, ensuring that residents can enjoy a vibrant and inclusive space.
