5 key facts about this project
Set in the peaceful forest of rural Vidzeme, Latvia, a 1875 stone barn, once a sawmill, undergoes a careful transformation. The aim is to turn this historic structure into a retreat for meditation and yoga. This design seeks to keep the barn's original character intact while adding modern amenities that cater to the needs of its users. The result is a space that blends history with purpose, providing an environment conducive to reflection and connection with nature.
Historical Preservation
The design focuses on preserving the barn's authenticity. The existing stone and brick facade is maintained, which allows the structure to retain its unique charm. A two-story addition is placed on two sides of the barn, providing guest rooms, bathrooms, and communal areas. This thoughtful expansion respects the historic nature of the building, ensuring that the new parts complement rather than overshadow the original structure.
Interior Environment
Inside, the barn transforms into a main event space and dining area. The room features a vaulted ceiling supported by exposed wood beams. This creates an open and inviting atmosphere, encouraging guests to interact. A suspended catwalk made of steel and wood adds a modern touch, creating a connection between the old and the new. Deep openings allow movement between spaces, fostering a sense of unity throughout the complex.
Natural Light and Connection
Natural light is a key element of the design. Projections on the south side of the barn allow bright daylight to fill the interior while creating specific areas for meditation and yoga. Glazed screens change colors, reflecting the themes of chakra, which resonate with visitors. Openings in the floor give glimpses of a creek flowing beneath, connecting the inside with the outdoor environment and enhancing the overall sense of peace.
Sustainable Features
The building’s design incorporates sustainability measures. Energy is sourced from hydroelectric power provided by the nearby Berzaune River. Photovoltaic solar panels on the roof offer additional energy support. Water is accessed through a well that can be drilled on-site. A garden for fruits and vegetables further encourages interactions with nature and promotes a self-sufficient lifestyle.
A silence chamber is included in a below-grade addition. This space provides privacy and quiet, away from common areas, with a skylight that brings in soft light, enhancing its calming presence.
