The Navigli architectural design project focuses on the revitalization of the historical Navigli canal system in Milan, Italy. This project aims to restore the physical and cultural significance of the canals while enhancing urban connectivity and promoting ecological sustainability. The design philosophy centers around re-engaging the community with natural water bodies and historical narratives, fostering a harmonious relationship between urban living and environmental stewardship.

Design Function and Urban Integration

The primary function of the Navigli project is to create a seamless interface between water, public space, and urban life. By re-opening and enhancing the Navigli canals, the project facilitates increased pedestrian and bicycle accessibility, thereby reducing vehicular traffic and promoting sustainable transportation methods. The design incorporates versatile public spaces such as parks, playgrounds, and gathering areas, which serve to encourage social interaction among residents and visitors.

Furthermore, the use of green infrastructure is a key component, with integrated planting areas and permeable pavements that contribute to improved water management and biodiversity. This not only enhances aesthetic value but also addresses urban ecological needs, ultimately leading to a healthier urban environment. The interweaving of historical landmarks, such as the San Marco Church, with modern architectural elements enriches the narrative of the site, linking past and present in a functional landscape.

Unique Design Approaches

A standout feature of the Navigli project is its emphasis on storytelling through architecture. Every design element is intentionally curated to reflect Milan's rich history and promote community engagement. Informative installations and unique landscaping create opportunities for education and reflection, fostering a deeper connection to the site.

The fluidity of the canal design is another distinctive aspect, with waterways integrated into the urban fabric rather than treated as separate elements. This approach encourages dynamic interactions between water and space, enhancing both functional and experiential qualities.

Incorporating a variety of materials—including natural stone, wood, metal, concrete, and planting soil—supports a balanced aesthetic that respects historical contexts while addressing contemporary urban needs. This thoughtful selection of materials contributes to the project’s sustainability goals, reinforcing resilience and longevity.

To explore the intricate details of the Navigli architectural project, readers are encouraged to review the architectural plans, architectural sections, architectural designs, and architectural ideas associated with this revitalization effort. Delve into the nuances of the project for a comprehensive understanding of its unique contributions to modern urban architecture.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
