The Black Barn - Painters' Lake House is located in rural Lithuania and serves as a creative space for artists. Inspired by the work of Vilhelm Purvitis, a notable figure in landscape art, the building seeks to connect with its surroundings. The overall design focuses on blending artistic workspace with the natural environment, enhancing the relationship between the occupants and the landscape.

Concept and Spatial Organization

The design incorporates a series of folded planes that respond directly to the site's topography and layout. This approach creates a flow between indoor and outdoor areas, supporting various artistic activities. At the heart of the building lies a workshop designed for both collaborative and individual work. All rooms are oriented to take advantage of views of the nearby lake, fostering an environment that encourages creativity and inspiration.

Materiality and Aesthetic Integration

Charred wood planks are used for both the outside and inside of the structure. This choice of material adds durability while also giving the building a distinct appearance that connects it to traditional practices. The charred finish enhances the surface's texture, allowing the building to blend with the rural landscape. The thoughtful selection of materials emphasizes the design's goal of integrating with nature rather than standing apart from it.

Ecological Considerations

An interesting feature of the Black Barn is its consideration for local wildlife, particularly bats. The design includes perforations in the southern façade, which allow these creatures to find shelter within the structure. This aspect not only helps to support local biodiversity but also reflects a commitment to ecological responsibility in the design process. The inclusion of these features showcases an understanding of how buildings can coexist harmoniously with the environment.

The southern garden is a central outdoor area that extends from the building. It invites occupants to immerse themselves in their surroundings as they engage in artistic pursuits. The garden’s terraces follow the landscape's natural slopes, creating a setting reminiscent of an outdoor auditorium that focuses on the serene views of the lake.
