The home of shadows is located in Ponta Garca on Sao Miguel Island, where the rugged coastline meets the Atlantic Ocean. The design seeks to create a close connection between people and nature, responding thoughtfully to the specific characteristics of the site. The concept revolves around integrating elements found in the environment, resulting in a building form that reflects the natural landscape and engages harmoniously with its surroundings.

Design Concept

At the core of the design is a structure that embodies the local environment. It features a cave-like appearance, which not only provides visual interest but also enhances the management of natural light. By creating a space that feels intimate and warm, the design allows residents to connect more deeply with their surroundings, fostering a sense of belonging and peace.

Spatial Configuration

The structure is designed as a large, open space, free from traditional walls and divisions. This layout promotes flexibility and encourages movement throughout the interior, enhancing the relationship between different areas. The arrangement of spaces is intentionally aligned with the flow of natural light, enabling occupants to experience the environment in an interactive way. This innovative approach to spatial organization challenges conventional layout ideas, allowing for varied uses and comfort.

Light Integration

Natural light is a critical aspect of the design. The roof acts not only as a protective cover but also as a source of light that brightens the interior. Additionally, the design includes solutions for nighttime lighting using direct sources from the roof. The reflective nature of surrounding water helps cast moonlight into the home, creating a soft, ambient glow after dark. This thoughtful use of light enhances the overall calmness of the living space.

Transparency in Design

Transparency is a significant element of the design, especially at the building’s ends. Large glass panels open up the space, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor areas. This transparency invites views of the ocean and countryside, allowing the landscape to feel like a part of the home. The result is a continuous connection with the natural world, enriching the experience of living there.

The entrance is defined by a large glass wall that brings in abundant light while framing picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean. This detail emphasizes the relationship between the home and the environment, creating a setting that is both welcoming and connected to nature.
