Burned Wood Facade and Folkloric Influence in a Lake-View Retreat

Incorporates charred wood for enhanced durability and distinct visual character.
02
Features expansive windows to optimize views of Lake Mývatn and the Northern Lights.
03
Reflects the Yule Lads folklore through architectural details and design elements.
04

The design is inspired by Icelandic folklore, specifically the Yule Lads, and is situated near Lake Mývatn and the extinct volcano Hverfjall. It serves a hospitality function while incorporating elements of cultural significance. The overall design concept blends traditional influences with modern needs. The goal is to create a space where guests can fully engage with the surrounding landscape and local stories.

Conceptual Framework

The Yule Lads provide a foundation for the design, merging mythology with architectural expression. Each of the thirteen characters is reflected in various design elements, enriching the experience for visitors. The building’s form combines aspects of traditional Icelandic homes and barns, fostering a connection with local architectural styles and the natural environment.

Spatial Organization

Spatial dynamics are carefully considered in the layout. Guestrooms are designed as individual spaces that focus on both privacy and views, allowing guests to enjoy the beauty of the landscape. This arrangement encourages closeness to nature while providing a comfortable retreat. Communal areas, including the kitchen and dining room, are placed to promote social interaction among guests, enhancing the overall atmosphere of the hospitality experience.

Material Utilization

Materials are chosen for their sustainability and local relevance. The facade features burned wood, reflecting traditional building practices while improving durability and energy efficiency. A ventilated facade system with a thermal layer addresses Iceland's climate, ensuring that the space remains comfortable throughout the year.

Visual Impact

The design makes a strong effort to connect with its surroundings visually. Each guestroom is positioned to maximize views, allowing visitors to appreciate the changing landscape, including the possibility of witnessing the Northern Lights. This focus on engagement with nature results in an inviting environment, elevating the experience for guests as they interact with the setting.

The architectural details subtly reference the Yule Lads, giving the building a unique identity that ties in with Icelandic folklore, offering guests a deeper connection to the local culture and landscape.
