The Thermal Springs Guest House at Vógafjós Farm Resort is located in Northern Iceland, surrounded by a landscape defined by the Hverfjall Volcano. The project consists of five structures designed to serve hospitality needs and facilitate social interaction among guests. Overall, the design promotes natural light, scenic views, and privacy while fostering a strong connection to the surrounding environment.

Architecture Concept

The layout features four smaller buildings that contain two guest rooms each, along with a larger central structure that serves common functions. This arrangement creates a peaceful atmosphere, respecting the natural shape of the land. Each guest room faces east, ensuring plenty of morning light and excellent views of the volcano. The careful positioning of the buildings enhances the relationship between guests and the landscape.

Materiality

Inside the guest houses, light-washed birch wood panels are used for the walls, allowing for more light to enter the spaces and maintaining a commitment to sustainability. The open design of the guest rooms provides both comfort and functional living areas. In addition, the spa-like bathrooms draw inspiration from the nearby Grjótagjá Hot Springs Cave, allowing guests to feel a connection to the local geography.

Integration with Nature

The design encourages interaction with the natural surroundings through outdoor spaces. Paths made of lava stone lead visitors to each room, while sunken terraces with fire pits invite guests to enjoy outdoor gatherings. This layout not only enhances the experience of staying in the landscape but also encourages a connection between nature and hospitality.

Observation Opportunities

Skylights are positioned to allow guests to gaze at the night sky, offering them a chance to view the Northern Lights from their rooms. This design element enhances the overall experience, allowing visitors to appreciate the beauty of the natural world around them.

Through these design choices, the project emphasizes a considered approach to hospitality that blends guest comfort with environmental awareness. It highlights the importance of building a relationship with the landscape through architecture.
