The Ribbon Garden project is a significant architectural design focused on creating a therapeutic environment for individuals receiving medical care, particularly in hospices. Located in Normandy, the project harmonizes with the natural landscape, fostering an atmosphere conducive to healing and reflection. The primary objective of the design is to emphasize the connection between architecture and nature, utilizing outdoor spaces to enhance the quality of life for patients and their families.

The design incorporates a series of interconnected areas that facilitate both private reflection and communal interaction. A continuous ramp connects various functional spaces, such as therapy rooms, a library, a meditation area, and a chapel, reinforcing the notion of accessibility for all users. The central garden serves as the focal point, emphasizing biophilic design principles and allowing nature to play an integral role in the healing process.

Unique Design Approaches

The Ribbon Garden distinguishes itself through its thoughtful integration of landscape and architecture. The extensive use of natural materials, such as wood, glass, stone, and Corten steel, enhances the tactile experience while ensuring durability. Large windows are strategically placed to maximize natural light, creating inviting interiors that foster a sense of openness and connection to the outside environment.

Shaded overhangs and well-placed skylights manipulate light conditions throughout the day, contributing to an ever-changing atmospheric experience within the spaces. The varied textures and colors in materials further support a calming and soothing environment beneficial for patients’ mental well-being.

Innovative aspects include spaces specifically designed to enhance social interaction among patients without compromising their need for privacy and tranquility. The areas for communal activities are intentionally situated to encourage spontaneous social engagement while maintaining an approachable, humane scale.

Architectural Features

Key architectural features include private therapy rooms designed as serene sanctuaries and common spaces that accommodate family gatherings and community activities. The layout encourages easy navigation with clear sightlines, allowing for staff oversight without feeling institutional.

The project employs sustainable practices, evident in its landscaping and material choices. Native plant species surround the built environment to minimize maintenance while reinforcing the connection to the local ecology.

The Ribbon Garden exemplifies how architecture can play a vital role in the healing environment of a hospice. The focus on integrating nature with built spaces creates a supportive atmosphere that prioritizes the needs of users.
