The Luciferin Villa is situated on a quiet beach in Vieques, Puerto Rico. It serves as a residential retreat, designed to engage closely with the surrounding environment. The project addresses the issues caused by light pollution and takes advantage of the natural bioluminescence in the nearby waters. The overall design concept aims to create a living space that enhances the experience of light, both during the day and at night, while maintaining a strong connection to the coastal landscape.

Architectural Form and Concept

The shape of the villa is inspired by the natural forms of bio-luminescent algae. This approach helps the building fit into its coastal environment more effectively. By mimicking these organic structures, the villa not only achieves a distinct look but also benefits from functionality. The design aims to capture and utilize light, similar to how algae respond to their surroundings. This connection to nature is central to the living experience intended for residents.

Lighting Strategies

Integrating natural light into the villa is a key element of the design. Skylights and brise soleils have been placed thoughtfully throughout the structure. These features are based on overlapping circular forms, allowing sunlight to enter the interiors while providing shade. This design reduces the need for artificial lighting, creating a comfortable atmosphere during the day. The interplay of light and shadow becomes an essential aspect of daily life within the home.

Connection to Environment

The location of the villa is carefully chosen to reduce the effects of artificial light from the surrounding areas. This positioning allows for clear views of the night sky, enhancing the experience of living by the coast. The natural glow of the beach becomes a part of the villa's charm at night, inviting residents to engage with the world outside. This strong bond with the environment highlights the commitment to sustainability and ecological awareness present in the design.

The roof features a distinctive arrangement of brise soleils that filter sunlight, creating interesting patterns on the floors of the villa. These shifting light effects connect the interior spaces to the outside world and change throughout the day. This relationship with natural light adds depth to the living experience, making each moment in the villa unique.
