The Bamboo Refuge, located in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, serves as a crucial shelter for a young refugee couple amidst the large population of approximately 200,000 displaced individuals. With a built-up area of 20.8 square meters, the design reflects a clear focus on modularity and sustainability, responding to urgent housing needs in a sensitive manner. The overall concept emphasizes flexibility and adaptability, creating a living space that can adjust to the specific requirements of its occupants.

Spatial Configuration

The layout of the Bamboo Refuge emphasizes a linear organization designed for usability. It consists of three main conditions: closed, semi-closed, and open. The closed condition is primarily used during the night and in adverse weather, offering necessary protection and privacy for residents. The semi-closed condition allows occupants to adjust the space based on their needs, providing a personalized living environment. The open condition encourages interaction and social activities, promoting a sense of community among those living in close quarters.

Materials and Structure

The design incorporates half-split bamboo flooring and a bamboo ground structure. These materials aid in maintaining thermal comfort while allowing for a lightweight construction. This choice of materials reflects local practices and supports rapid assembly, making them suitable for the urgent needs of a displaced population. Additionally, features like underground water storage and specific water catchment areas ensure that residents have access to clean water, addressing one of the most critical needs in a refugee context.

User Experience

The focus on individual and collective needs is a key aspect of the Bamboo Refuge. The design supports social interactions while also providing private spaces for personal retreat. Residents have the ability to configure their surroundings according to immediate needs, enhancing their sense of control over the living environment. The inclusion of collapsible masses facilitates easy reconfiguration of the space, which allows for a richer experience in daily living.

Strategic openings throughout the structure enhance airflow and bring in natural light. This feature not only helps to regulate temperature but also creates a sense of openness and well-being in the compact living area. Such details contribute to a positive atmosphere, ensuring that residents feel comfortable in their shelter while navigating the challenges of their circumstances.
