The Icelandic Movie Pavilion is an architectural endeavor set against a dramatic landscape filled with ancient craters and geothermal features. It serves as a cultural center that offers a venue for films while engaging visitors with the surrounding environment. The design concept is rooted in the integration of the building with its natural setting, which influences both its shape and use.

Design Concept

The shape of the pavilion is inspired by the contours of nearby craters, creating a connection between the construction and the land. This relationship enhances the visual appeal and encourages a sense of harmony with the natural surroundings. The accessible roof invites guests to appreciate the sweeping views of the Icelandic landscape and connects them more deeply to the space.

Materiality

Sustainability plays a key role in the construction approach, as cross-laminated timber serves as the main structural material. This choice supports efficient building methods and provides a strong framework. The façade utilizes polycarbonate, which improves energy efficiency and helps the structure withstand harsh weather conditions common in the region.

Spatial Organization

The design divides the pavilion into multiple functional areas, including a movie auditorium, a drive-in cinema, and a boardwalk leading to scenic features. This layout accommodates various visitor activities, from watching films to exploring the outdoors. The courtyard functions as a communal area with seating and a fire pit, encouraging guests to gather and engage with one another.

Guests can experience both culture and nature simultaneously. The roof serves as an observation point, offering sweeping views of the Icelandic terrain, allowing visitors to celebrate the beauty of their surroundings while enjoying the space.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
