5 key facts about this project
The Kemeri National Park Visitor Center is a proposal located at the entrance of Kemeri National Park, Latvia, designed to facilitate visitor interaction with the surrounding natural environment. The study explores a rectangular building form that contrasts with the native pine forest while establishing a recognizable visual presence. The center accommodates educational and communal activities, aiming to enhance understanding and appreciation of the local landscape.
Spatial Strategy
The building is organized around a symmetrical arrangement of supporting column beams, within which four differently sized volumes are incorporated to create a varied spatial experience. Large interior communal areas encourage interaction among visitors, while expansive windows provide continuous visual connections to the forest. Educational features, including a diorama of local flora and fauna, are integrated to enrich the visitor experience and foster engagement with the natural environment.
Materiality and Sustainability
Exterior cladding uses locally sourced, painted black wood, while concrete supports are molded to replicate wood grain, reinforcing a tactile connection to the landscape. Sustainable strategies include solar panels, a heat and air exchange system, and high-performance insulation to improve energy efficiency. The combination of natural materials, daylighting, and mechanical systems reflects a holistic approach to environmental integration and occupant comfort.
