The Iceland Black Lava Visitor Center stands as a conceptual structure within a stunning landscape. Positioned on the edge of a cliff, it offers expansive views of the surrounding area, featuring distinct geological shapes and natural beauty. The building serves as a central hub for visitors exploring the Black Lava Fields, focusing on creating a deep connection between people and nature.

Design Concept

The center's design emphasizes the framing of views to enhance the visitor experience. Openings are placed to highlight significant landscapes, inviting guests to appreciate their surroundings. This approach encourages exploration and interaction, allowing people to engage with the natural scenery while moving through the building.

Functional Layout

The visitor center is divided into two main levels. The basement includes important facilities like a lobby, information desk, and spaces for families. Its gently sloping entrance ensures easy access for everyone, allowing visitors to transition smoothly from the exterior to the interior.

On the first floor, visitors find a spacious reception area, along with a café, exhibition space, lounge, and a viewing terrace. Large glass façades bring in natural light, creating a bright atmosphere that connects the inside with the outside. The presence of a bridge further facilitates movement and invites exploration between different functional areas.

Materiality and Craftsmanship

Materials play an essential role in the design, helping to establish a relationship with the local environment. The basement features strong concrete walls that provide structural support. In contrast, the upper levels use glued laminated timber, which allows for open spaces filled with light. Volcanic stone is incorporated in an interesting way for the exterior, linking the structure to the region's geological features.

Attention to craftsmanship showcases a dedication to local traditions while incorporating modern techniques. This balance is evident in the thoughtful details throughout the design, which honor the area’s heritage and natural context.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
