Weaving Affordable Communities introduces The Ribbon, a housing prototype aimed at addressing the issues of affordability and homelessness in urban spaces like New York City. The design focuses on modularity and adaptability, providing a flexible solution that can accommodate various living situations. The concept creates a living environment that encourages community interaction among residents while meeting practical needs.

Form and Function

The Ribbon's modular design effectively supports communal living. Each unit is capable of housing individuals or small families, with configurations for one adult, two adults, or a family of three. The layout allows units to connect and wrap around one another, facilitating shared outdoor spaces that promote social engagement. This arrangement enhances the sense of community while making efficient use of available land.

Construction Methodology

Advanced construction techniques play a key role in the development of The Ribbon. A two-step construction process streamlines building time, allowing for quicker responses to housing demands. The design uses a 3D printed structural outer shell, which improves both durability and efficiency. Lightweight concrete further supports structural integrity while reducing the overall weight of the units, presenting a sustainable approach to urban housing.

Site Selection

The Ribbon is planned for various sites throughout New York City, including the Brooklyn Pier, Bronx Lot, and Manhattan Lot. Each of these locations brings different challenges and possibilities for implementing the design. The choice of Brooklyn Pier highlights the complexity of urban environments and showcases the adaptability of The Ribbon model to meet local needs.

This design incorporates outdoor communal areas, contributing to the functionality of the living spaces. These areas not only enhance the overall experience for residents but also promote a connection to the environment, encouraging eco-friendly practices in daily life.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
