Adil Yirmibeş and Ozan Yalçın from Turkey

We are two friends working as architects in various cities of Turkey. We completed our undergraduate education at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul, Department of Architecture. During our undergraduate education, we had the chance to work on many projects together. This situation has improved us a lot in thinking and generating ideas together. After graduating in 2016, we started to work as an active architect in different companies.

Ozan received his master's degree in architectural design from Yıldız Technical University in Istanbul in 2021. Meanwhile, he worked as an architect at Norm Architects, Ozer/Urger Architects and DMTO2012. He won various awards in student and professional competitions organized on a national scale. He is currently continuing his work.

Adil received his master's degree in building information at Bursa Uludağ University in Bursa in 2022. During this period, he worked at Tiba Architecture firm. He won awards in various national and international competitions. Since 2019, he has been working as a research assistant at Bursa Uludağ University.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been involved?

In our 7 years of professional architectural life, we have worked on various building types and scales. In his master's thesis, Ozan specialized in modular housing with the study titled “21st century modular housing designs and sustainable modular housing proposal”. On the other hand Adil, made a specialist study on urban analysis methods with his study titled “Evaluation of the changes in Meşrutiyet Street urban housing area from 19th century to present using the analytic method of city images”.

We prefer small and medium-sized architectural projects in the work we do together. We think that our design approach is more suitable for these scales.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

We see architecture both as a means of designing a space and as a phenomenon that we encounter in every part of life. We like to focus on the effects of architectural designs on people. We work with a human focus on the designs we make. In our opinion, there is a natural connection between architecture and human, and therefore architecture directly affects human life. For this reason, we find local and cultural effects in architecture is valuable. Our aim is to preserve traditional architecture and integrate modern solutions into our architecture.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?

We believe that competitions develop architectural practice. We are excited to work in different subjects and fields. Seeing different approaches on the subjects studied gives us new perspectives. We also enjoy developing projects.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?

We think that competitions in architecture improve the expression technique. Thanks to platforms such as Buildner, participants interact with each other and discover new architectural approaches. In addition, the contestants gain architectural experiences in different parts of the world. These achievements are strong reasons to participate in competitions.
