Please tell us about your company (when it was founded, where it is based, how many employees, etc) Alternatively, if you do not have a company, please give us some insights on your own professional/academia background.
Since graduating from The Spitzer School of Architecture in 2018, my professional experience includes projects ranging from private residences in rural Idaho to mixed use developments on the Brooklyn waterfront. The throughline in my design approach is a thoughtful connection between historical and physical context, and the investigative dissection of the program. I explore architectural solutions through a range of mediums and embrace new technologies and methodologies to express the possibilities of design.
Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been Involved?
I’m currently working on an 800+ unit development in Brooklyn, New York. The project boasts several sustainability strategies including the redevelopment of a former industrial site and the largest residential application of ground source heat pumps in the United States. I started on this project in 2020 as a response to an RFP and am now overseeing the contract administration through construction with a completion date of 2026.
What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?
For me, architecture captures the spirit of a time. It reflects the traditions of the past, the realities of the present, and the aspirations of the future. I see the role of the architect as that of understanding, processing, and representing these abstract concepts into a spatial form.
Why do you participate in architecture competitions?
Participating in architectural competitions is a form of expression. It gives me the opportunity to explore and develop concepts that excite me while honing skills in design and representation. Especially as I dive deeper into professional practice, competitions can be a breath of fresh air that allows me to keep engaged with my inquisitive side.
What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?
For anyone considering participating in a competition, I encourage you to start by exploring the brief and looking for an idea that resonates with you. The competition format itself is beneficial in that it keeps you on a deadline and encourages you to create and critique yourself and your processes. Regardless of the outcome, completing the competition rewards a sense of pride and the opportunity to grow and learn from your peers.
