Domenico Francesco Lio from United States

I am an architect with 25 years of experience working on large complex mixed-use and healthcare projects.  I have worked at NBBJ for a total of 18 years, 17 years in the New York office. I am a graduate of the University of Michigan and Ryerson University.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been involved?

At NBBJ, we focus on large complex projects with an emphasis on integrated design: beauty, performance, and meaningful experiences. It has been an honor to work on award-winning international projects and competitions that build a better world for future generations.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Architecture is our responsibility to make the world a better place.  It means we must engage and actively improve conditions we may be able to influence, whether they be small acts of kindness, teachable moments, or transformational ideas.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?

I love all aspects of architecture competitions and the design process; research, discovery, the a-ha moments, iterations, editing, and presentation. Hopefully, the result is innovative, I have learned something from the experience, I can share what I learned, and continue to evolve in this ever-changing world.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?

Architecture competitions are the perfect vehicle to explore, learn, and share your ideas with the world.  It’s a chance for you to raise your hand and let the world know you have a great idea to share; something to say - something that can hopefully make a difference in people’s lives.
