Virginia Lucía Chavarría Elvir from Nicaragua

I am currently working as an architect in Germany. I obtained my bachelor's degree in architecture at the Central American University UCA - Managua and my Master's degree in Architecture at the ETSAB-UPC Barcelona.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been involved?

During the last years, I have worked on small and mid-scale projects, mainly residential and educational. I really enjoy the design and planning of schools, as they are very integral projects with high community impact, one never stops learning.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Architecture for me is a way of living and interacting with the world. In this sense, I believe that the role of architecture in society is very broad and complex. In a few words, I could say that the role of architecture is the creation of comfortable and uplifting environments in accordance with its context.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?

I participate in architectural competitions because I believe it is a way to stimulate the creative mind. It presents new challenges with unique programs, uses, and locations. I enjoy witnessing the diverse proposals and ideas from other designers while also sharing my own.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?

For me, architecture competitions have been great resources.  If you have time, energy and desire to participate, do it. Time invested in learning and enjoying what you do is always a win.
