Doruk Alpsar and Amina Meslem from United Arab Emirates

AMINA SALMA MESLEM - Graduated with BSc in Architectural Engineering from the University of Sharjah, currently working as a graduate architect at a renowned international architecture firm in Dubai.

DORUK ALPSAR - Holds an MSc. degree in Architectural and Urban Design from the University of Edinburgh, UK, and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from I.D. Bilkent University, Turkey. With more than 4 years of experience as a design architect on high-profile projects at international design firms, currently working as an assistant architect at a renowned international architecture firm in Dubai.

Brief information about the projects that you/your team have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been involved?

Mixed-use master planning projects, as well as smaller scale architectural projects, such as villa design and fit-out/interior design projects, focused mainly on hospitality and commercial sectors. Participating in design competitions at various scales.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

We see architectural practice as a way to understand and speculate into networks of relations between the environment, society, and human subjectivity.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?

We participate in architecture competitions in order to build up and diversify our design portfolio, challenge ourselves, and obtain new skills.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?

We believe that each competition is a challenge in which you always come out with new skills and different ways of thinking; therefore, it is always beneficial for architects and designers.
