The New York High Falls Riverfront Market competition invites architects, designers, and creative thinkers to imagine a new civic destination within the evolving landscape of Rochester’s future High Falls State Park.

Located along the dramatic Genesee River gorge in western New York State, the project site sits within one of the city’s most historically significant industrial and natural landscapes — a place where waterfalls, infrastructure, public space, and industrial heritage converge.

Waterfall in New York.

[Image above] High Falls is the 96-foot waterfall that gave rise to the city of Rochester and powered its industrial growth for more than a century. Today, the falls remain the defining landmark of the future High Falls State Park and the broader riverfront transformation reconnecting Rochester with the Genesee River gorge. The New York High Falls Riverfront Market competition site is located within this evolving landscape at the Smokestack Portal — one of the future gateway sites connecting the city to the park and riverfront below.

Architecture for Connection.

Presented by Buildner in partnership with AIA Rochester as part of its annual Designers Unleashed initiative, together with Community Design Rochester and Future Reality Services, the competition explores how architecture can contribute to the transformation of Rochester’s riverfront into a contemporary public landscape centered around gathering, culture, and everyday urban life.
[Image above] The New York High Falls Riverfront Market competition site is located along the edge of the Genesee River gorge within the future High Falls State Park. The image illustrates the relationship between the competition site, the historic smokestack landmark, and High Falls itself further upstream — highlighting the broader riverfront landscape and network of future public connections shaping Rochester’s evolving waterfront transformation.
Participants are asked to design a contemporary riverfront market together with the surrounding public space at the Smokestack Portal site — one of the future entry points into High Falls State Park. The proposal should function as both an active public destination and a gateway into the future park system while responding carefully to the site’s dramatic topography, industrial identity, and relationship to the Genesee River gorge.

New Market. New Gateway.

[Images above] The New York High Falls Riverfront Market competition site occupies a prominent riverfront location within the future High Falls State Park along the edge of the Genesee River gorge. The images illustrate the existing site conditions, including the historic industrial smokestack landmark, surrounding infrastructure, adjacent public trails, and the open landscape designated for future redevelopment.
The smokestack remains one of the defining visual elements of the site and serves as a reminder of Rochester’s industrial relationship with the riverfront. Together, the site’s dramatic topography, industrial remnants, and proximity to the gorge establish the unique character and spatial conditions shaping the future transformation of the High Falls district.

The competitive intensity gives our creative energy focus and pushes us to question what we believe we are capable of. It encourages us to challenge our first ideas, test unfamiliar approaches, and keep developing a proposal beyond the point where we might otherwise stop. Working through that process together often reveals limits in our thinking that we had not recognised, and possibilities we would not have discovered without the challenge.

I participate in competitions because I learn a lot from seeing how others respond to the same brief. After working through the same challenge myself, I also learn a lot by studying the winning entries.

HONORABLE MENTION

After graduating and starting to work in architecture, competitions became a creative outlet that we missed from school. In practice, there are often project constraints and deadlines that shape how you approach design, whereas competitions give us a chance to step back and explore ideas more freely. We see them as an opportunity to keep challenging ourselves, try different approaches, and continue developing our creativity and skills as designers.

Exploring design apart from our everyday context is what drives us to take on these challenges. Competitions offer a unique opportunity to step outside our conventional routine and break free from familiar design habits, while creating an architectural conversation among societies. Beyond sharpening our problem-solving skills, they push us to engage with architecture through a boundaryless, global lens.

We participate in competitions because none of us had much experience with the competition process before, and we wanted to experience it for ourselves. We like that competitions create a very specific working environment: there is a clear task, a fixed deadline and a set of constraints. At the same time, there is a lot of freedom in how you approach the problem and develop your own idea. Of course, the competitive aspect is part of the attraction. But we are equally interested in the process itself and in seeing how far we can develop an idea within a limited amount of time. For us, it is also a way to test different ways of working together and to see how we can turn an initial idea into a coherent architectural proposal.

We love taking on new challenges. Since architecture reaches into every part of how people live, we don't want to stay within one field. That's why we enter competitions on all kinds of themes and face questions we rarely come across in our everyday work. The Museum of Emotions was a completely new challenge for us. With no text allowed, only images, it gave us the opportunity to test whether space alone could convey an emotion.

3RD PRIZE
Authors

Kim Sunbin and Jung Hwanseok  from South Korea!

I participate in architecture competitions to see a wide range of projects and ideas from diverse environments and to explore ways to use these ideas to help my community. They are also an opportunity to test myself in front of people who are recognized for their excellence and leadership in the field.

2ND PRIZE

Architecture competitions give us the freedom to explore ideas beyond the constraints of a conventional client or program. For The Loop Within, this meant exploring emotion and the cycle of human life through architecture — moving between openness and enclosure, light and darkness, joy, uncertainty, fear, and acceptance. Our collaboration was also an important part of the process. Coming from different cultural and religious backgrounds, we became interested not in emphasizing what separates us, but in exploring the experiences that ultimately make us alike. Competitions give us the freedom to test these ideas and develop our own architectural voice.

1ST AND STUDENT AWARD

Architecture competitions hold a unique and important place in the profession, offering value both to society and to the architects who participate. As architects, we have a responsibility to be visionaries in the built environment and to champion equitable, sustainable, and beautiful design. Competitions provide a forum to test those ideas while building a toolkit of skills and approaches that can inform our work and, potentially, the work of others. They create space for critical investigations of the design zeitgeist and for experimentation that can push the discipline forward. I participate for my own growth as a designer—and because they are good fun.

We treat competitions above all as a way to test ourselves. Each one is a chance to push into unfamiliar territory — new project types, new tools and software, new ways of working — and to come out the other side with knowledge and skills we didn't have going in. Just as importantly, competitions strengthen the team. Working intensely toward a single deadline shows us where each person is strongest and how we work best together, so that every entry leaves us more capable and more efficient on the next one — and on the real projects that follow. The result matters, but the growth is the point.
