Siyu Mao-Aviation Studio

Involved Project: ICON-Hollywood Burbank Passenger Replacement Terminal

Corgan have introduced 'The Icon', a revamped design for the Hollywood-Burbank (BUR) terminal. This 355,000 sq. ft. facility serves Burbank and Greater Los Angeles, enhancing passenger experience with improved amenities, security, and baggage services. The modern design draws from old Hollywood glamour and Mid-Century styles, with the standout canopy reflecting local history, offering both shade and a signature landmark. A notable feature is the canopy, inspired by local history and architectural styles. This unique design not only provides visual appeal at the curbside but also offers shade to passengers in the plaza and parking areas. It symbolizes both the innovation in aviation and the region's cinematic heritage, serving as a standout landmark for the area.

Qiuying Lu-Residential Architect

Zuru Tech is currently engaged in two significant projects: 1. BIM Software Development: We’re developing intuitive BIM software that aims to simplify the home 2 building process. This software allows users to design their houses through our comprehensive system that integrates design, development, production, and installation stages. 2. Product Range Development: Parallel to our software efforts, Zuru Tech is actively creating an extensive product catalog for home construction. This includes everything from foundational structural components and mechanical systems to finer details such as doors, windows, tiles, and other fixtures. Additionally, as a testament to our capabilities, Zuru Tech is constructing sample houses worldwide, showcasing the application of our technology in real-world scenarios. My specific role revolves around designing and building these sample houses in the U.S. market.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Siyu Mao

Architecture is not just my profession; it's the tapestry of my dreams and the enduring pursuit of my life's journey. Through architecture, I have the tools to reimagine and elevate the spaces I inhabit. Each design choice I make leaves a lasting imprint, allowing me to contribute positively to the world.

I have lived in Los Angeles for four years. In LA, architects do more than just design buildings; they shape the heartbeat of the city. They create spaces that inspire and energize the community, fostering places where people from nearby communities can come together and interact. These designs encourage conversations, facilitating a blend of ideas from various cultures. Through thoughtful architecture, they promote a rich cultural exchange, helping LA remain a melting pot of innovation and diversity.

Qiuying Lu

To me, architecture is poetry written in materials. Within architectural spaces, I can perceive subtle nuances and expand my imagination. Architecture design allows my poetic imaginings of space to materialize and interact with everyday life.

In my society, architecture not only provides shelter, protecting us from the natural elements but also carries the weight of sustainability. It ensures that our constructed spaces respect and coalesce with the natural world, safeguarding it for generations to come.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?

Siyu Mao

Participating in architecture competitions opens doors to diverse projects beyond my regular work scope. The research and learning throughout these contests not only deepened my grasp of architectural design but also expanded my understanding of different cultures and societies.

Qiuying Lu

Apart from the projects I encounter in my work, I often hope to hone specific skills that interest me. Thus, I frequently keep an eye out for intriguing competition topics. Currently, I’m focused on the renovation of historic buildings, the use of natural materials in construction, and memorial architecture. I’m eager to participate in competitions related to these themes to accumulate experience in these areas.
