Şeyma Çimen from Turkey

I finished my bachelor’s degree at the Bahçeşehir University in 2019 and have worked as a freelancer since. During my architectural education, I attended ICSA (Inter-cultural Study of Architecture) program at the Mukogawa Women’s University in Japan, in 2018.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been involved?

In my professional life, I’m interested in all aspects of design, from objects to buildings. Lately I’m more focused on flexibility, adaptability, and modularity that can easily adapt to rapidly changing conditions

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Architecture is a process of exploration for me. While being inspired by fields such as art, history, philosophy, sociology, and culture, architecture continues to contribute to these fields.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?

Competitions are a different way of learning and exploring architecture. What I learn from my own project and from other projects can be my biggest motivation when not only the process, but also the results are released.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?

In addition to our professional or academic life as a designer, competitions allow us to improve ourselves, recognize problems in different subjects and places, produce problems, and seek answers to them. We can discover new things at the end of the day.
