We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to one of our Honorable mention winners for our "MICROHOME #4" competition – Valeriia Sema, Dmytro Yahodin, Olga Kovalchuk and Maryna Machulina from Ukraine!
Honorable mention winners - Archmatika from Ukraine
We are a team of architects working together in the Archimatika company. The company was founded in 2005 and is based in Kyiv. This is one of the largest companies on the Ukrainian market. We deal mostly with residential architecture, also multifunctional projects, office projects, renovations, etc.
Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been involved?
We work as architects-creators, we took part in the design of such projects as:
• Multifunctional hub Bukovel
Multifunctional hub "Bukovel" will become the heart of the main Ukrainian ski resort. The design, which unites interior and exterior, creates a genuine connection with the environment and highlights the unique nature of the Carpathian Mountains.
• Residential complex Doma Trabotti in Odesa
The terraced sections of different heights form a lively silhouette and provide excellent views even from the building's second row. The complex's entrance lobbies are reminiscent of premium hotels in New York, the architecture of which became the main source of inspiration for creating the project.
In addition, we are now taking part in a project that will reconstrue an industrial area into an office hub and are currently working on a residential complex in Kyiv.
Besides that, our company has designed several residential complexes – Faina Town, Comfort Town, Respublika.
What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?
Architecture is an art that solves a large number of needs and has a large number of factors: aesthetics, practicality, expediency, and functionality. Architecture is one of the constituent formations of the space in which a person lives, works, walks, or rests. An architect is a person who is aware of social, technical, scientific, and artistic problems. The architect strives to improve the environment in which we live, to idealize it as much as possible and thereby create a modern style. It is the architect who reflects the life of the era.
Why do you participate in architecture competitions?
During the war in Ukraine, we faced new challenges related to construction requirements. We saw that the current system is imperfect. At that time, we found the microhome competition and decided that it was a great opportunity to try to show what the solution to these problems could be.
What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?
Architecture competitions are a great opportunity to try something new, take a break from your usual projects, and offer something completely conceptually new. Participation in such competitions is one of the options for developing oneself as an architect and for the development of world architecture. Do not be afraid to try your hand at competitions. It is quite a good way to express your ideas. With each attempt, you will be able to develop both as a person and as an architectural professional. So, join in!
