Please tell us about your company (when it was founded, where it is based, how many employees, etc) Alternatively, if you do not have a company, please give us some insights on your own professional/academia background.

We are 4th-year architecture students, studying for a bachelor's degree at Multimedia Nusantara University (Universitas Multimedia Nusantara). Throughout our academic journey, we have participated in and conducted research about urban development, in various design scopes. Hands-on and immersive research has often become our approach for problem-solving the real-life issues that we were tasked to respond to. These approaches help us in determining the appropriate response that would highlight the spatial expression and the spatial needs of society. Although we only had roughly 4 years of studio design projects, we took that opportunity to explore and experiment with various ways of narrating stories through our projects. Moreover, we often collaborate with the faculty to conduct research for community development and exposure.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been Involved?

At Multimedia Nusantara University, the projects that we take most of the time circle around urban design. Urban-based projects with varying scopes serve issues that are unique to the site. We focus a lot on community empowerment, environmental tactics, and urban sustainability, while also integrating green design aspects to practice our awareness regarding the environmental impact of the creation that we will produce. We can also input experimental design innovation in our projects, this practice always reminds us that architecture is everchanging and is continuously growing.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

For us, architecture is a medium that connects humans with their environment. It is not as shallow as just designing mere buildings, instead, architecture is about creating a space and a designated place for people according to their needs, whilst knowingly designing a system that will not only spatially affect people’s activity, but could also affect them in other aspects of their lives. As architecture can be found anywhere, architecture currently is our immediate environment that we will always interact with, something we will always need. An architect has a big role in world-building, with defining how the world works and defining the immediate environment to which we are always attached to. It is a vital role since it has such power to create a system that can affect society’s activities and, therefore alter people's lives.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?

We simply participate in architecture competitions, to challenge ourselves with the notion of figuring out “How far can architecture go? To what extent can we explore architecture?”. Being an architecture student, our academic projects are limited to specific design scopes. One way of exploring other themes and experimenting with our design approaches is through participating in competitions like Buildner’s. This is a whole different experience that will give insights that we might not be able to get from our academic journey alone.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?

Just go for it! Architecture competitions will give a whole different experience that you might not be able to get from just doing professional or academic projects. The learning process will be different and most likely, you will have more creative freedom for your work. The process of going through different approaches in responding to specific issues will allow you to deliberate the pros and cons of each design response, a good exercise for your architect minds with a fresh premise that you might not often encounter. The experience you get could also be applied in your future projects, maybe as an example, or as a learning experience.
