Cinema/Scope is located in the breathtaking landscape of Iceland, highlighting the blend of cinematic experience and natural beauty. The design focuses on engaging visitors by inviting them to connect with the films on display while being surrounded by the ever-changing environment. By integrating architecture with landscape, Cinema/Scope stands as a place where the experience of film transcends traditional boundaries.

Conceptual Framework

The concept of Cinema/Scope revolves around the relationship between the viewer and the film. The name itself embodies this idea; "Cinema" refers to the visual storytelling that captivates audiences, while "Scope" introduces the range of experiences available within the space. By creating an environment where viewers feel immersed in the film, the design reflects Iceland's variable climate and diverse seasons, ensuring that each visit offers something new and unique.

Spatial Organization

Three distinct cinema spaces are at the heart of this design. The Landscape Cinema is intended to blend with the natural surroundings, allowing the beauty outside to enhance the viewing experience. The Garden Cinema provides a tranquil atmosphere, encouraging contemplation and a sense of peace. The Focus Cinema caters to dedicated film lovers, featuring design elements that prioritize an optimal viewing experience. Together, these spaces create diverse avenues for engaging with cinema, ensuring that every visitor finds their preferred way to connect with film.

Material and Structural Design

Volcanic ash concrete is a key material choice, providing sustainability and effective thermal retention suited for the local climate. This material aligns with the aim to be environmentally responsible while building in such a unique location. The structural framework consists of steel columns and beams, forming a solid base that enables open spaces within the cinema. Incorporating these materials ensures the durability and efficiency of the structure as it interacts with its environment.

Architectural Experience

The entrance invites visitors to descend along a gently sloping pathway, leading them into the cinematic space. As they progress, they enter a spacious hall that offers views of a distant volcano, fostering a connection between the cinema and the surrounding landscape. The design allows visitors to see the sky from the hall, evoking the feeling of being inside a natural cave. After viewing a film, guests ascend back to ground level, reinforcing their link to the remarkable Icelandic environment.
