Views Framed by Stone Walls and Glazed Interiors in a Vineyard Tasting Room

Project in-detail

Crafted with a stone-bearing wall and expansive glazed interior, the structure offers unobstructed views of the vineyards while serving as a communal wine tasting space.
5 key facts about this project
01
Crafted to enhance vineyard views, offering visual connections through strategic openings.
02
The stone-bearing wall facilitates a unique ascent, creating anticipation and engagement.
03
Interiors are designed to maximize natural lighting and create a warm atmosphere.
04
Small seating areas integrated within the wall encourage visitor interaction with the landscape.
05
The layout promotes a seamless flow, enhancing the communal experience of wine tasting.

The wine tasting room at Quinta do Monte d'Oiro is located on a hill that offers wide views of the surrounding vineyards. Designed as a communal space, it enhances the wine tasting experience through careful placement and spatial organization. The design emphasizes a connection with nature, allowing visitors to enjoy both the atmosphere inside the tasting room and the scenic beauty outside.

Architectural Response

The design establishes a bond between the building and its landscape by presenting two distinct appearances. When seen from the vineyards, the structure shows a solid stone wall with large glass windows, while the ceramic tile roof blends well with nearby buildings. From above, it integrates into the hillside, maintaining a visual connection with its surroundings.

Spatial Dynamics

A significant feature of the design is the stone-bearing wall, which serves essential roles in both support and user experience. This wall reshapes the terrain and connects different levels of the site via stairs. As visitors climb the stairs, their views of the vineyards are hidden until they reach the tasting area, creating a sense of anticipation. Small openings along the wall allow brief glimpses of the landscape, keeping visitors engaged as they ascend.

Functional Layout

The interior layout of the wine tasting room promotes movement and interaction among visitors. The spaces are arranged to encourage exploration and provide different experiences around wine tasting. Each area is designed to foster social engagement, highlighting the communal nature of enjoying wine.

Materiality and Detail

Materials used in the construction include the stone wall, large glass windows, and ceramic tiles on the roof. These materials were chosen for their performance as well as their visual appeal. Together, they create a tactile environment that complements the natural landscape. The interplay of light and shadow adds depth to the experience, making the transition between inside and outside feel inviting. Visitors are encouraged to take in the surroundings, creating a rich and engaged tasting experience.
