The Monte D'Oiro Wine Tasting Room at Quinta do Monte D'Oiro is positioned at the end of a path that runs alongside the winery, providing a view of the surrounding vineyards to the northwest. This design serves as a space for wine tasting, aiming to create a strong bond between visitors and the scenic landscape. The overall design concept utilizes the natural terrain, allowing the building to act as a point of interest as well as a welcoming destination for those seeking to enjoy the vineyard experience.

Architectural Form and Concept

The building’s design takes inspiration from the shape of a grape cluster. It is organized into triangular modules that create separate interior spaces while encouraging easy movement between indoor and outdoor areas. This approach not only makes effective use of the space but also helps the structure fit well with the sloping site, framing views of the surrounding landscape and allowing nature to play a part in the experience.

Aesthetic Integration

Visitors approaching the wine tasting room see a structure that blends with its environment. The sloped roofs mirror the nearby hills, adding to the sense of harmony with the topography. Additionally, timber canopies create shaded areas that link the inside and outside, inviting visitors to interact with nature as they move toward the entrance.

Functional Organization

Inside, the layout is carefully planned to accommodate necessary functions such as entry, service zones, a bar, terraces, and the main tasting area. This organization supports an intuitive flow throughout the building while raising the structure on a platform that enhances views of the vineyard, enriching visitors' overall experience.

Sustainability Considerations

Sustainability is a core focus of the design, seeking to minimize carbon emissions throughout its lifespan. Timber is chosen as the main material for structural components and finishes, which aligns with environmental goals. The building features passive cooling strategies using its folding envelope, promoting natural ventilation while large windows capture sunlight to warm the interior during colder months.

An expansive terrace extends from the tasting room, providing visitors with an unobstructed view of the vineyards. This design choice encourages guests to immerse themselves in the landscape while savoring their selections of wine.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
