The Grechello EDA project is located in a landscape that brings together built and natural environments, highlighting the cultural aspects of wine. The design focuses on creating immersive experiences through a range of interconnected spaces. These spaces serve both communal activities and private retreats. By fostering interaction and exploration, the architecture encourages visitors to engage with their surroundings deeply.

Architectural Concept

The design is based on well-defined spaces that work together harmoniously. At the heart of the layout is a communal area meant for wine tasting and social interaction. This area contrasts with private modules designed for quiet reflection. This arrangement allows the occupants to move easily between social gatherings and personal time. The design responds thoughtfully to the natural landscape, enhancing its existing features without overwhelming them.

Materiality

Choosing the right materials plays an important role in the project's success. Travertine is used for the exterior finish, providing both durability and aesthetic appeal that harmonizes with the environment. Waterproof membranes and civil plaster protect the structure from moisture, while brick tiles on the floors offer a warm, tactile experience for those who walk through the spaces.

Insulation and Sustainability

To maintain comfortable indoor climates, the project incorporates insulation materials like extruded expanded polystyrene (EPS) and stone wool. These choices help regulate temperature effectively. The use of crystalline silicon photovoltaic panels reflects a commitment to sustainability. This approach aims to reduce environmental impact while improving energy efficiency.

Structural Components

The building's structural integrity relies on galvanized steel elements, which support drainage and the overall framework. Concrete floor slabs and screeds form a solid foundation, ensuring the durability of the building. These components contribute to a design that is not only functional but also connected to its landscape.

The pathways throughout the site invite exploration. They lead users through an experience that combines wine culture with the beauty of the vineyard. This integration enhances the overall encounter, making the journey through the space as meaningful as the destination.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
