The design incorporates multifunctional spaces to adapt to modern living needs.

The design in Balwyn North, a suburb of the City of Boroondara in Melbourne, Australia, aims to change the way we think about residential spaces. It addresses the challenges posed by increasing population density and the limitations of traditional quarter-acre blocks, which generally contain a single home. The design encourages a more sustainable approach through urban consolidation, reflecting modern demands and priorities in residential living.

Conceptual Framework

At its core, the design embraces the idea that urban sprawl is not a viable solution for the future. It emphasizes density as a more responsible approach to housing. This philosophy is encapsulated in five key principles: sit lightly, be sustainable, be ecological, be affordable, and be beautiful. Each principle serves as a guideline, ensuring that the final design aligns with the values of contemporary living while being practical.

Spatial Composition

The interior layout features spaces designed for multiple functions, enhancing everyday life. The living area includes skylights that allow natural light to flood in, creating a brighter atmosphere and fostering a sense of connection to the outdoors. The dining area is linked to the kitchen, encouraging social gatherings and promoting a feeling of community among residents.

Innovative Features

The bathroom is designed with a bathtub that has a cover, highlighting a balance of comfort and practicality. Additionally, the verandah acts as an important architectural element that integrates indoor and outdoor experiences, making the home more livable and inviting.

Material Application

The choice of materials reflects a thoughtful approach to sustainability. The design employs glue laminated timber and cross laminated timber for structural components, offering strength and durability. Rendered FC sheet is used selectively, providing a clean and modern finish that complements the overall design. These material selections reinforce the commitment to creating a responsible living environment.

A sunken bath with a walkable bamboo batten cover illustrates a practical design detail, optimizing the use of space while adding an element of innovation. This feature enhances the overall experience of living in the home, merging functionality with aesthetic appeal.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
