FLOATING Microhousing Solution for Boat Dwellers in China

The FLOATING project presents a microhousing solution designed for the Dan people, who live in the coastal areas of southern China. This community has adapted to life on the water, using boats as their homes. The project takes on a spherical shape to improve stability and safety against extreme weather, maximizing available vertical space while providing a functional living environment.

Design Concept

The circular design plays a crucial role in enhancing the structure's strength against harsh winds and heavy rain. Unlike traditional linear shapes, this rounded form allows for better distribution of forces acting on the building. The project integrates essential living areas into a compact plan, which meets the day-to-day needs of its residents while ensuring comfort and usability.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the FLOATING design includes all vital living spaces thoughtfully arranged for ease of movement. There is a kitchen and dining area, a storeroom, a bathroom, a living room, a workspace, and a bedroom. This organization helps the Dan people carry out their activities effectively within a limited area. Each space is functional, reflecting the simple yet necessary aspects of daily life on the water.

Material Considerations

The construction uses prefabricated metal grids, metal panels, and glass panels. These materials are chosen for their strength and affordability, making them suitable for quick assembly and adaptation to floating conditions. Metal and glass come together to form an attractive and robust structure that can withstand the challenges of its marine environment.

Sustainability Features

Incorporating renewable energy sources is another important aspect of the FLOATING project. The design utilizes wave energy systems to generate electricity for the residents. Additionally, a sewage treatment system is integrated into the structure, allowing for responsible waste management. This focus on sustainability underlines the commitment to providing better living conditions while caring for the surrounding environment.

Large windows bring in natural light, fostering a connection to the water outside. This feature creates an open and welcoming atmosphere while allowing residents to appreciate the unique setting they inhabit.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
