Rammed Earth Walls and Outdoor Decking in a Lakeside Artist Residence

Project in-detail

Constructed with rammed earth walls and an expansive outdoor deck, the lakehouse provides a tranquil environment for artists to work and connect with nature.
5 key facts about this project
01
Custom glass gallery connects two separate volumes for enhanced light and interaction.
02
Rammed earth walls provide both thermal mass and a connection to local materials.
03
Outdoor deck design adapts to seasonal climate variations for flexible use.
04
Unique studio layout encourages collaboration while preserving individual privacy.
05
Overhangs protect against harsh weather while maintaining unobstructed lake views.

The lakehouse near Černostes Lake serves as a residence and a workspace for artists, combining living areas with studios to create a place focused on creativity. The design seeks to capture the relationship between the built environment and nature, reflecting the surrounding landscape. Drawing from the thoughts of Latvian-American painter Mark Rothko, the project embodies an artistic experience that encourages interaction with both the lake and its forested surroundings.

Spatial Arrangement

The lakehouse consists of two main volumes that are connected by a glass gallery. This layout allows the different parts of the house to remain separate yet interconnected. The lower volume faces the water, providing expansive views and enhancing the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. The design encourages community interaction while ensuring that private areas exist for personal artistic work.

Outdoor Spaces

An outdoor deck surrounds the lakehouse, designed to support various activities and weather conditions. This deck serves as a flexible area for gatherings or solitary reflection amid nature. The layout promotes an easy flow between the interior and exterior, inviting residents to engage with the landscape while enjoying the fresh air and natural light.

Natural Light

Light is a critical element in the design of the lakehouse. Tall ceilings, large windows, and sliding doors allow ample daylight to enter the living spaces. This creates a calm atmosphere that supports creative thinking and artistic processes. The glass gallery enhances the spacious feel of the interiors. The sliding doors face north, minimizing direct sunlight and providing clear views of the lake while maintaining a comfortable environment.

Material Choices

The use of rammed earth walls creates a strong connection to the local environment while contributing to the building's energy efficiency. This choice helps regulate indoor temperatures through passive solar heating. Pine wood steps at the entrance add a natural touch, blending the structure with its surroundings. Terrazzo tile flooring in the interior connects the design to traditional building methods in Latvia, reinforcing a sense of place and cultural context.

The light curtain that connects the studios introduces a gentle interplay of transparency and structure, allowing filtered light to enhance the creative atmosphere within the home.
