The Microhome in Guangzhou's Urban Village is an innovative architectural project designed to address the pressing housing needs in a rapidly urbanizing environment. Located in one of Guangzhou's urban villages, the microhome serves as a practical solution for accommodating low-income populations, effectively utilizing limited space while fostering community interaction. The design aims to enhance the quality of life for residents by offering a multifunctional living space that adapts to contemporary lifestyle demands.

Utilizing sustainable materials and modern building techniques, the microhome features a robust steel structure combined with efficient insulation to maintain energy performance. The exterior is clad in corrugated metal sheets that provide durability and facilitate rainwater management. The design emphasizes adaptability and functionality, incorporating elements such as a trapezoidal deck and perforated screens that enhance both aesthetics and environmental efficiency.

The project is characterized by several unique design approaches that set it apart from conventional housing solutions. Key features include:

Innovation in Space Utilization

The microhome's layout is strategically planned across three levels to maximize natural light and space utilization. The ground level serves as a communal area, fostering social interaction among residents, while the second level has been designed to accommodate a flexible working environment. This adaptability allows for a seamless transition from living to working spaces, catering to the dynamic lifestyle of urban residents. On the upper level, a private sleeping area is optimized to capitalize on views and natural light, creating a comfortable retreat from the bustling urban context below.

Sustainable Design Interventions

The project incorporates several sustainable design elements that focus on environmental responsibility. The integration of solar panels and an energy-efficient electric water heater showcases a commitment to renewable energy usage. Additionally, the implementation of a rainwater harvesting system enhances the building's self-sufficiency and reduces reliance on municipal water sources. The use of eco-friendly materials in the interior finishes further exemplifies the project’s emphasis on sustainability, aligning with contemporary architectural practices aimed at reducing ecological impact.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
