Set in the dynamic city of Tokyo, the project explores the relationship between meditation and urban life. It aims to create spaces that foster tranquility amid the hustle and bustle of city living. By focusing on meditation as a space between thoughts, the design seeks to carve out distinct areas of calm. This “empty space,” referred to as a gray zone, serves as a setting where clear forms exist alongside moments of stillness.

Conceptual Framework

The idea of an empty space is central to the design. It emphasizes a need for areas within busy urban environments that can provide a sense of retreat. Scaffolds are integrated into the design, acting as both functional structures and symbolic elements. During the day, these scaffolds are in use, but they become undefined at night. This shift illustrates the transient nature of urban life and invites users to reflect on their experiences in the city.

Meditation Cabins

The project features meditation cabins, each designed by a different architect. This variety creates unique experiences for users. Each cabin allows individuals to engage with personal space in their own way. As people enter, they are encouraged to pause and reflect. This individualized experience becomes an essential component of the project's overall intent.

Light and Presence

Inside the meditation cabins, light plays a crucial role. It fills the spaces and enhances the feeling of presence. This careful use of light creates a peaceful atmosphere, making the interiors a contrast to the busy city outside. It invites users to connect with the space, emphasizing the project’s aim to provide a retreat for contemplation.

Scaffold as Transition

The scaffolds throughout the design serve an important purpose, linking the ideas of temporary and permanent structures. Traditionally seen only as construction elements, within this context, they spark a conversation about the nature of urban spaces. Their presence encourages exploration of how architecture can include moments of transition.

Each cabin stands as an important part of the overall design, contributing to a narrative focused on personal space in the context of urban life. The interplay of light and form within these spaces invites ongoing interaction and contemplation, highlighting the project’s thoughtful approach to creating environments that prioritize meditation and reflection.
