Living Among the Tidal Flows with Recycled Wood and Terracotta

Project in-detail

Constructed with recycled wood and terracotta, the dwelling offers a unique living experience set amid the dynamic environment of Salt Marshes, providing a tranquil retreat connected to nature.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed using recycled wood panels that enhance the connection to the environment.
02
Features terracotta flooring made from local marsh earth for thermal stability.
03
Accessible solely by canoe or paddle, promoting a detachment from urban life.
04
Designed with an open layout to facilitate interaction with the natural landscape.
05
Includes a rainwater harvesting system for sustainable water management.

The Liveable Pontoon is located in a swamp area where seawater interacts with the river, creating the distinct ecosystem of Salt Marshes. The aim is to build a living space that fosters a strong connection between its occupants and the natural world while also fulfilling everyday needs. The design encourages openness and engagement with the surrounding environment through its thoughtful layout.

Design Concept

The structure consists of interconnected volumes, each designed for specific functions. This vertical organization helps smooth movement through the space and encourages interaction across different areas. By eliminating traditional walls, windows, and doors, a sense of continuity is created between indoor and outdoor spaces. This design invites nature in, allowing residents to experience life closely linked to their environment.

Material Selection

The materials used in construction include recycled wood panels that form a barrier between the living space and the outdoors. This choice not only allows for better airflow and natural light but also creates a visual connection with the landscape. The flooring is made from terracotta, sourced from local marshes, which is effective in maintaining thermal comfort, keeping the interior space stable in varying weather conditions.

Sustainability Measures

Sustainability is a key focus in the design. Energy is generated by a propeller that harnesses ocean currents, providing electricity for lighting and water filtration. The roof is equipped to collect rainwater, which is directed into a tank in a canal, ensuring it remains cool and fresh for drinking after treatment. These efforts reflect a commitment to a self-sufficient lifestyle while reducing environmental impact.

Experiential Elements

Unique experiences shape the daily life of the residents. Living here allows for outdoor showers along the river and the opportunity to sleep under the stars. This design prioritizes comfort, functionality, and an intimate relationship with nature, offering a way of life that resonates with the rhythms of the Salt Marshes. Each element invites occupants to embrace their surroundings and appreciate the simplicity of living closely with the environment.
