Live Edge Cladding in a Radially Symmetrical Food Court Design

Project in-detail

Constructed with live edge cladding and plain sawn lumber, the radially symmetrical food court provides a communal hub that integrates seamlessly into the surrounding forested environment.
5 key facts about this project
01
Radial symmetry enhances circulation and user engagement.
02
Live edge slats replicate natural forest forms on the façade.
03
The structure incorporates a multipurpose Tent Town for diverse functions.
04
Plain sawn lumber reduces waste and increases construction efficiency.
05
Seating areas are integrated into the cladding design for space optimization.

The Grove is designed for the Sansusi festival, located within a forested area. The food court structure features a radial layout that encourages movement and interaction among visitors. Open and connected spaces allow for easy transitions between different areas, creating a welcoming atmosphere.

Design Concept

The project focuses on sustainability and minimal waste in construction. By using a shared framework, the design enhances accessibility and promotes social engagement. This approach supports a sense of community, making it easy for festival-goers to connect with one another as they navigate the space.

Materials

Plain sawn lumber is the main material used for structural framing. This choice emphasizes practicality and strength while aligning with the overall design vision. Vertical live edge slats make up the cladding, adding texture to the exterior. This feature reflects the natural surroundings and reinforces the connection to the landscape, blending the structure with its environment.

Functional Spaces

Beyond food service, the design incorporates various facilities that address different needs. Tent Town offers a residence center, bar, musician area, children’s playroom, sauna, coffeehouse, and dome stage. These diverse spaces cater to a wide range of activities, enhancing the experience for all festival attendees and encouraging participation across demographics.

Construction Method

Efficient use of resources defines the construction process. Initial steps include framing the building on a concrete hexagonal foundation, followed by the assembly of both interior and exterior wall sections. The final touches incorporate functional elements like work surfaces and doors.

The vertical slats, serving as both cladding and seating, maximize space utility while fostering community interaction. This thoughtful detail creates inviting areas where visitors can gather and enjoy their time at the festival.
