The Shell is a modern residential design located in Gdynia, Poland, positioned on a cliff that offers expansive views of the Baltic Sea. The main goal of this project is to blend well with the natural surroundings while reflecting the urban modernist style of the area. The concept is inspired by the image of a lighthouse rising from the coastal landscape, creating visual connections to the environment and showcasing stunning vistas of the port city.

Design Configuration

The design features a modified circular layout that enhances the views of the ocean and allows ample natural light to enter. Central to this layout is a staircase topped with a spherical skylight. This skylight serves multiple purposes, acting as a source of light and providing vertical access between different levels of the home. It is a key element that promotes a feeling of openness within the space.

Spatial Arrangement

Rooms are positioned at different elevations around the central staircase. This arrangement allows sunlight to filter through the openings in the core, enriching the internal atmosphere. Windows are placed at various angles, and some are sculpted to diffuse light. This creates a shifting pattern of light and shadow throughout the day, adding depth to the living spaces.

Material Selection

Sustainability is a significant aspect of The Shell's design. The materials chosen for construction include clay, straw, and wood. These materials support eco-friendly building practices and contribute to the formation of a structure characterized by soft curves and no right angles. This approach not only emphasizes environmental responsibility but also enhances the comfort of the spaces.

Detailing and Aesthetics

The ceilings are finished with reflective bumpy glass, introducing a quality that echoes the movement of the sea. This reflective surface captures and spreads light, bringing a sense of nature indoors. Soft edges are also a prominent feature in the design, promoting a smooth transition between spaces and helping to create an inviting atmosphere throughout the home.
