Integrating Agriculture With Lingnan Inspired Community Layout

Project in-detail

Rooted in Lingnan architectural traditions, the integration of agricultural spaces within a band-like residential layout redefines community living for relocated villagers.
5 key facts about this project
01
Band-like layout promotes community interaction among residents.
02
Integration of agricultural plots within residential areas supports farming practices.
03
Design reflects traditional Lingnan architecture, maintaining cultural heritage.
04
Orientation optimizes views of surrounding farmland for natural light.
05
Use of prefabricated components enhances construction efficiency and flexibility.

The design for Feng Wei Zhuang, located in the 'Knowledge City' masterplan in Guangzhou, aims to bridge the gap between rural and urban life. It focuses on integrating rural villagers who have been displaced by urban development into a new environment. The core concept draws from traditional 'Lingnan' architecture, featuring a band-like arrangement that encourages community interaction while maintaining strong ties to the land.

Spatial Organization

The layout utilizes a band structure to arrange both living and working spaces. This design allows for flexible housing units that residents can customize and rent. Each plot includes small private gardens along with larger communal farm areas, bringing agricultural activities back into daily life. By incorporating farming into the community's routine, the design promotes sustainability and respect for traditional practices.

Community Engagement

The design fosters community interaction by creating spaces for shared activities and collaboration. Amenities are positioned within the grid layout, which encourages residents to connect with one another easily. This arrangement facilitates daily interactions, helping to build a sense of unity among inhabitants. The layout enhances the living experience by making access to communal and private spaces straightforward.

Visual Connectivity

The orientation of the buildings is a significant aspect of the design. Houses are angled towards agricultural areas, allowing ample natural light to enter and framing views of the surrounding fields. This connection to nature is vital, as it reinforces the bond between residents and the land they work on. Seeing farmland from their windows helps maintain the community's agricultural ties amid urban changes.

The use of prefabricated components allows for a flexible architectural framework that can adapt to the community's changing needs. This strategy supports the preservation of agricultural land while accommodating growth. By maintaining cultural heritage alongside modern living, the design creates an environment that respects both tradition and progress.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
