Hexagonal City is designed to tackle the need for affordable housing in Sydney. Amid rising land prices, this project aims to provide accessible living options for low and moderate-income households. The overall concept focuses on combining different types of housing in a way that meets the needs of middle-income families, achieving this through thoughtful spatial design and efficient use of geometry.

Layout and Geometry

The structure uses a hexagonal layout, which efficiently maximizes space for high-density living. This geometric shape enhances the available floor area while maintaining a smaller footprint for the housing units. By incorporating this design, the project allows for expansions in the future. The arrangement promotes a sense of balance among the various living spaces and integrates them into the larger community.

Modular Design Strategy

Each unit is developed as a modular component, with parts constructed off-site to streamline construction. This strategy reduces time spent on-site. Different module types can be intermixed, offering flexibility in their layout. Because of this system, varied living arrangements are possible, allowing the design to adapt and meet different needs. The approach also helps to create visual interest within the overall development.

Residential Atmosphere

Units are designed to provide a home-like atmosphere rather than the feel of standard apartments. Features such as double-height spaces and small private gardens contribute to a feeling of comfort and ownership for residents. This design choice encourages community interactions, aiming to enhance the living experience. The goal is to create a welcoming environment where people feel connected to their homes and their neighbors.

Sustainability and Community Focus

The project places a strong emphasis on sustainability and community-oriented living. Shared spaces between units are part of the plan, which fosters social engagement among residents. Natural elements are integrated into the environment, reinforcing the aim to create a community. This design approach responds thoughtfully to the challenges of urban living, addressing both physical needs and social interactions of the residents.

Attention to detail shows in the inclusion of small gardens for each unit. These outdoor spaces provide personal areas for residents to connect with nature and promote a sense of belonging in the community.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
