5 key facts about this project
The "Folded Creature" is a modular design positioned in the lively urban setting of Tokyo. Located at Shibuya crossing near Hachiko square and close to the busy Yamanote line train stations, it aims to raise awareness of mental health issues. The design resembles a walking sculpture that provides a public space, offering a moment of calm within the city's constant motion.
Materials and Structure
The structure is made up of seven compact HPL panels, which are made from kraft paper. These panels connect through metal plates, which give the design strength while allowing for a flexible form. The exterior is painted white, helping it blend into different city surroundings while still being recognizable.
Interior Design Elements
Inside, the panels have rice paper cladding, which is colored in a dark warm red. This choice creates a comforting atmosphere that welcomes people into the cabin. The familiar feel of the rice paper and its connection to traditional Japanese elements, like origami and shoji screens, makes it relatable to the local community. The contrast between the external simplicity and the rich colors inside invites visitors to explore.
Reimagining Public Space
"Folded Creature" changes how public space is perceived by creating an area free from distractions. It encourages engagement without requiring specific activities from users. The architectural folding concept allows the structure to appear dynamic, creating an inviting environment for contemplation amid the bustling urban area.
As sunlight moves across its surfaces, “Folded Creature” offers a beautiful display of shadows, changing how it looks throughout the day. It draws attention and enhances the character of the Tokyo landscape, providing a moment of peace within the city’s energy.
