The House of Arches is a residential design located in the heart of Paris, aimed at fulfilling modern housing requirements. Its concept is centered around adaptability and community involvement, using a series of modular arches. These arches not only serve structural purposes but also define various social spaces. By occupying an existing urban void created by another building, the design elevates living areas above street level, allowing for an engaging experience with the busy surroundings.

Design Concept

Three different sizes of arches define the space within the housing block. The large arch creates area for communal gatherings, blending both public and private activities. This promotes interaction among residents. The medium arch facilitates movement and connections between different parts of the building. Meanwhile, the small arch, designed with human proportions in mind, sets the boundaries for private living spaces, ensuring comfort and privacy for those who reside there.

Spatial Organization

Situated at the intersection of busy streets and a pedestrian square, the House of Arches allows residents to enjoy a unique living experience. Elevating the living spaces above the street improves safety for the occupants. As residents navigate to their homes, they pass through public areas that encourage socializing and engagement with neighbors. This thoughtful arrangement enhances the sense of community and fosters cultural connections.

Community Spaces

A significant aspect of the design is the communal area represented by the large arch. This space includes shared kitchen and dining options, as well as an elevated terrace, making it easy for residents to interact. The double-height configuration emphasizes its importance as a gathering point, supporting social activities and reinforcing the neighborhood bond.

Materiality

The project features a selection of key materials. These include steel connector plates, polished concrete cladding, rigid insulation, air barriers, and structural reinforced concrete. Each material serves a specific purpose, ensuring structural strength while also contributing to the overall aesthetic, linking the new design with the historical context of Paris.

Elevated terraces offer residents not just views of the city but a place to meet and socialize. These spaces help create a community within the urban environment while providing the comfort and privacy of home.
