The Last Genocide Memorial is an architectural project designed to honor the victims of genocide while fostering dialogue among diverse communities. This memorial serves both as a place of remembrance and a platform for reflection, emphasizing humanity's shared responsibility to prevent future atrocities. Its design integrates a range of spatial and experiential elements that contribute to its overarching narrative.

The structure features a cylindrical form, symbolizing unity and continuity. The exterior is characterized by a series of hexagonal perforations made from stretch metal, allowing diffused light to enter while maintaining a sense of enclosure. The interior serves as a contemplative space, inviting visitors to engage with the memorial on both personal and collective levels. The choice of materials, including painted metal and reinforced concrete, is purposefully made to reinforce the memorial's message and facilitate the desired emotional response.

Integrative Design Approach

A distinguishing feature of the Last Genocide Memorial is its emphasis on accessibility and engagement. Visitors approach the structure through a pathway that metaphorically represents the journey toward understanding. Upon entering the Ring, individuals must lower their heads, symbolizing humility and respect for the memory of the victims. This physical act is designed to create an immediate connection to the somber purpose of the memorial.

The memorial's unique spatial configuration allows for a range of experiences. As visitors move through the space, the interplay of light with the materials culminates in varied atmospheres throughout the day. The internal LED lighting system enhances this dynamic, casting warm glows that foster a sense of hope amidst remembrance. This adaptability in design encourages continuous interaction with the memorial, as the atmosphere shifts in response to changing environmental conditions.

Material and Construction Details

Materiality plays a crucial role in conveying the memorial's narrative. The combination of stretch metal for the outer covering and painted metal sheet on the interior evokes themes of remembrance and resilience. The materials are selected not only for aesthetic appeal but also for their structural properties, contributing to the functionality and longevity of the memorial.

The internal structure, supported by reinforced concrete, ensures stability while providing a seamless integration with the surrounding landscape. This relationship with the natural environment enhances the contemplative quality of the memorial, inviting an ongoing dialogue between nature and architecture. The design's intent is clear: to create a space that transcends mere physical presence, serving as a reminder of the past and a guide towards a more hopeful future.
