Adaptable living solutions cater specifically to Millennials' lifestyle needs.

The Light Space Microhome project offers a new approach to residential living, drawing on concepts from Japanese Metabolism Architecture. It targets modern households, particularly Millennials, who seek flexibility and adaptability in their homes. The design breaks down traditional living spaces into distinct functional units, allowing for personal customization and growth as family needs change.

Modularity and Adaptability

The project features three main units: the LS2BR3 Bedroom, the LS2KT2 Kitchen, and the LS2BA2 Bathroom. Each unit serves a specific purpose, creating a home that can be tailored to individual lifestyles. This modular approach encourages users to rearrange or expand their spaces. As families grow, they can easily add more units, enhancing their living experience without the constraints of a fixed structure.

Natural Light and Spatial Flow

Natural light is a key element in the design of Light Space. The strategic use of glass doors, walls, and skylights ensures that each unit benefits from ample daylight. This brings warmth into the interiors and connects the inside with the outside. The layout supports smooth transitions between different areas, which enhances the overall feeling of space and openness. Each pod works together to create a harmonious living environment.

Sustainability and Functionality

Sustainability is an important focus of the design. Features such as rainwater collection and greywater recycling show a commitment to responsible living. These elements are integrated into the layout, highlighting how modern residential designs can be environmentally conscious while remaining practical. Thoughtful planning ensures that these systems operate efficiently without compromising the comfort of the home.

The architecture incorporates gentle curves, which adds a visually appealing aspect while maintaining functionality. This design choice reflects a balance between aesthetics and everyday use. Each unit not only serves a purpose but also interacts with the others to create a cohesive living space. The overall effect is one of a welcoming, adaptable home that can respond to the needs of its occupants.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
