The Gaudi La Coma hostel rises from a mountainous landscape, focusing on a deep connection with nature. Located in a striking setting, it aims to provide an environment where residents can find both community and solitude. The design concept revolves around blending indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing for interaction with the natural surroundings and fostering a sense of belonging among users.

Sundial Gnomon

A prominent feature of the structure is the massive sundial gnomon, which serves as both an entry point and a timekeeping element. This feature helps to guide visitors into the public and active zones of the hostel, encouraging interaction among residents. The way light moves through these spaces changes throughout the day, inviting individuals to engage with their environment in a more meaningful way. This aspect reinforces the relationship between time and the experiences within the hostel.

Spatial Organization

The layout of the hostel is carefully designed to include both communal areas and private spaces. Residents can choose where to work, whether in their rooms for quiet reflection, in shared environments for collaboration, or while gazing out at the beautiful scenery. This flexibility supports a range of activities and helps to meet the varied emotional and functional needs of those who live there.

Sustainable Practices

Sustainability is a key principle in the design, especially in how rainwater is managed. Curved shapes throughout the building are used to direct rainwater to permeable surfaces for irrigation of landscaped areas and community farms. This thoughtful approach demonstrates a commitment to ecological practices, promoting not only environmental care but also a sense of responsibility among the residents.

Artistic Expression

The use of colored glass windows adds a unique artistic touch to the hostel, allowing natural light to fill the interiors and enhancing the connection to the outside world. Inspired by the local landscape, this element plays with light and color, creating different atmospheres throughout the day. The beams that support the curvy ceiling resemble leaf veins, adding an organic quality. The glass ceiling mimics a rose window and functions as a sundial plate, combining art and function. This careful design allows residents to engage with the shifting light and shadow, creating a rich sensory experience.
