Charred Wooden Shingles and Laminated Frames Define A Sustainable Modular Shelter Experience

Project in-detail

Utilizing charred wooden shingles and laminated frames, the design seamlessly integrates with nature while offering adaptable shelter for outdoor enthusiasts.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed with interlocking timber frames for efficient assembly and disassembly.
02
Utilizes charred wooden shingles for enhanced durability and eco-friendliness.
03
Features custom configurations to adapt the interior layout for diverse activities.
04
Incorporates large openings to promote natural light and ventilation while ensuring privacy.
05
Designed for portability, allowing relocation to various natural settings with ease.

The project, "cab3in1," focuses on modular shelter design situated in a natural setting characterized by woodlands and the amber river. This architectural endeavor embodies a harmonious relationship between built environments and nature, addressing contemporary needs for flexibility, sustainability, and comfort in outdoor accommodations.

The primary function of this design is to serve as adaptable living spaces for travelers and outdoor enthusiasts. The modular shelter permits various configurations, easily tailored for different activities, including relaxation, storage, and social interaction. Each unit is constructed to promote a connection with the surrounding landscape, ensuring occupants can fully engage with their environment.

The architectural framework comprises interlocking timber frames, specifically designed for straightforward assembly and disassembly. The use of laminated veneer lumber, plywood, timber flooring, and shingle cladding ensures structural integrity while minimizing ecological impact. This careful selection of materials not only enhances durability but also instills warmth and familiarity within the interiors.

Unique Design Approaches

The cabin's modular arrangement allows for a personalized user experience, where individuals can modify the internal layout to suit their needs. This adaptability is rarely seen in comparable projects, as it combines functional living with the essence of outdoor experiences, enabling diverse activities in one cohesive space. Furthermore, the integration of large openings fosters natural light and ventilation while maintaining privacy.

Another distinctive feature is the efficient assembly process that employs a puzzle-like interlocking system. This approach significantly reduces construction time and resource consumption compared to traditional methods. Each unit is designed for portability, making it suitable for various locations, resonating with the growing trend towards mobility and flexibility in architecture.

Exploring Architectural Ideas

The "cab3in1" project exemplifies a thoughtful approach to modern design, showcasing the potential of modular architecture to respond to ecological concerns while meeting practical human needs. Its innovative configuration, sustainable materials, and emphasis on user adaptability set it apart from conventional designs. Those interested in deepening their understanding of this project can review the architectural plans and sections to explore the underlying concepts further and observe how these architectural ideas have been translated into functional living spaces.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
