Charred Wooden Shingles and Cross-Laminated Timber Create Meditative Spaces in Residential Design

Project in-detail

Constructed with charred wooden shingles and cross-laminated timber, the design emphasizes perambulatory meditation through distinct pavilions that foster mindfulness and community interaction within a residential setting.
5 key facts about this project
01
Charred wooden shingles enhance fire resistance while providing aesthetic depth.
02
Cross-laminated timber panels promote sustainability and structural integrity.
03
Distinct pavilions facilitate a flow of movement for perambulatory meditation.
04
The central courtyard acts as a communal hub, encouraging social interaction.
05
Seasonal adaptations include features for both winter warmth and summer cooling.
The Part-to-Whole House is an architectural project designed to facilitate perambulatory meditation through a unique spatial arrangement. This design emphasizes mindfulness, seasonal adaptability, and a close relationship with nature, creating a harmonious living environment. Comprised of four distinct pavilions surrounding a central courtyard, the structure is crafted to promote both individual reflection and communal interaction.

The primary function of the Part-to-Whole House is to provide a meditative living space that encourages residents to engage in their daily routines mindfully. Each pavilion serves a specific role: the living/sleeping pavilion provides areas for rest and socialization; the washing pavilion offers privacy and rituals of cleansing; the meditation pavilion is specifically designed to foster focused contemplation; and the utility pavilion houses essential services. This thoughtful arrangement allows for seamless movement between spaces, reinforcing the project's core theme of meditation in motion.

Design Elements and Unique Approaches

The unique design approach of this house is anchored in its meditative framework, where the planning promotes mindful transitions between different functions. The layout creates intentional paths that residents traverse, enhancing their awareness of movement and time. This awareness is further reinforced by acknowledging seasonal variations, as features such as a wood-burning stove provide warmth during colder months, while strategically placed windows ensure cooling airflow during summer.

The integration of natural elements is a hallmark of the project. By using materials such as locally sourced stone, wood, glass, and metal, the design not only addresses structural and aesthetic considerations but also promotes sustainability. The courtyard serves as a central focal point, encouraging engagement with the surrounding landscape while acting as a gathering space for social interaction.

Spatial Relationships and Functionality

The flexible relationship between the four pavilions and the central courtyard maximizes the usability of the space, giving residents options for relaxation, meditation, and socializing in a cohesive environment. The architectural sections of the design highlight this interaction, showcasing how each pavilion is connected yet distinct. Cross-ventilation and natural lighting are prioritized throughout, enhancing the overall comfort and functionality of the house.

The Part-to-Whole House stands out in the architectural landscape for its focus on mindfulness and meditation within residential design. Its unique arrangement of spaces fosters an environment where reflection and community coexist harmoniously. This project exemplifies how thoughtful architectural design can influence lifestyle and well-being.
