Cave-Inspired Gathering Space Incorporating Geometric Abstraction and Natural Light

Project in-detail

Inspired by the natural forms of the Grjótagjá cave, the design employs geometric abstraction and dynamic light to create a communal space for cinematic experiences and social interaction.

02
Natural light is incorporated to enhance the spatial experience.
03
The layout promotes social interaction and community engagement.
04

Located near Grjótagjá cave in Iceland, the design captures the rugged beauty of the landscape while serving as a venue for cinematic experiences. The structure functions as a space for both film viewings and community gatherings. Drawing from the essence of Icelandic storytelling, the design emphasizes a connection between the building and its natural surroundings, inviting visitors into a contemplative environment that reflects the qualities of a cave.

Conceptual Framework

The design integrates the landscape into the structure by using geometric shapes. This approach takes inspiration from the surrounding environment and the narratives found in Icelandic cinema. A circular layout is employed, promoting a sense of unity and coherence while allowing for interaction between the inside and outside.

Spatial Configuration

Inside, the layout is structured to encourage movement, guiding visitors from one area to another in a logical flow. The main path leads from the film screening space to communal areas, such as a café designed for socializing. The arrangement fosters interaction among visitors while maintaining a sense of purpose in each area.

Light and Materiality

Natural light is a key element, helping to connect the interior to the dramatic landscapes of Iceland. The way light and shadow play within the space adds depth and character. Color is also thoughtfully incorporated, brightening the surroundings and creating a lively atmosphere that contrasts with the often subdued colors of the natural environment.

Detailing and Ambience

Attention to detail contributes significantly to the overall experience. Textures and variations in height create tactile interactions, inviting visitors to explore the space fully. Sound is also considered, with design elements that promote quietness, creating an environment suitable for watching films. These design details enhance the atmosphere, making the space enjoyable and contemplative.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
