Blue Light and Constricting Geometry in a Monument to Persecuted Lives

Project in-detail

A monument characterized by narrowing walls and a blue light that reflects the trauma of witch trials, positioned in Salem, Massachusetts, serves as a solemn memorial for those unjustly persecuted.
5 key facts about this project
01
The monument features a pathway that increasingly narrows to symbolize entrapment.
02
Blue light integrated into the design mirrors the flicker of flames, evoking historical associations with fire.
03
Sharp edges of the structure represent societal pressure faced by the accused.
04
There is no exit at the end of the pathway, reinforcing themes of finality and judgment.
05
Located at World’s End in Salem, the monument directly connects to historical witch trials.

The monument dedicated to the life of witches is located in the historic area of "World's End" in Salem, Massachusetts. Its purpose is to honor the experiences of those who suffered during the witch trials. The design concept centers around the theme “from start to finish,” which reflects the journey of witches from innocence to persecution. Through its layout and form, the structure invites visitors to engage with a narrative that highlights both personal and societal struggles.

Conceptual Framework

The design begins with low, flat walls that symbolize the lives of witches before their trials. This part of the structure conveys a sense of openness and potential. As one moves deeper into the monument, the space shifts to more confined areas defined by rising, narrowing shapes. These sharp edges illustrate the increasing pressures and harsh judgments that the accused faced. This transformation effectively captures their movement from freedom into confinement.

Spatial Dynamics

Inside the monument, the experience becomes one of entrapment. As visitors follow the path, the environment grows more constrictive, culminating in a space without a visible exit. This design choice reinforces the notion of finality in the witches’ lives. At the end of the pathway, a thin line emerges from the tight walls, representing an abstraction of death and closure. This creates a powerful moment of reflection for those who navigate the monument.

Light and Atmosphere

Light is an important element in shaping the feelings within the monument. A blue glow follows visitors as they move through the space, casting reflections that resemble flickering embers. This connection to fire deepens the narrative, evoking associations with the judgment and execution of witches. The way light interacts with the shadows creates an environment conducive to thoughtfulness, guiding visitors through the solemn journey.

The design conveys a strong message through its careful consideration of spatial elements. At the end of the pathway, the interplay of narrowing forms and illuminating lines encapsulates the profound themes of loss and remembrance. Visitors are left to reflect on the weight of history and the stories locked within the monument.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
