5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes a foundation of Black Lava Field to connect the structure to its volcanic surroundings.
02
Incorporates a three-dimensional support system of columns and beams for enhanced space efficiency.
03
Features solar panels integrated into the roof design for sustainable energy use.
04
Utilizes high-performance low-emissivity glass to optimize natural light and insulation.
05
Includes a children’s playground as an integral part of the community-focused design.

The recent design is situated within a unique geographical context characterized by volcanic landscapes. The layout comprises various multifunctional spaces that focus on engaging visitors while promoting exploration and interaction. It features areas such as a Lock Hall, an Exhibition Area, a Volcano Observation Theater, and a Children’s Playground. Each space is designed to support different activities while allowing for an easy transition throughout the building.

Structural Elements

The building incorporates a three-dimensional support system consisting of columns and beams, providing open spaces that enhance movement throughout. The foundation includes a Black Lava Field, linking the structure to its natural environment. This is complemented by reinforced concrete beams embedded within the stone, ensuring stability and resilience against local environmental factors.

Materials and Energy Efficiency

Materials chosen for the design emphasize sustainability and practicality. The roof includes solar panels integrated into a roof sheet sandwich, contributing to energy efficiency without compromising on aesthetics. Steel rivets are placed at regular intervals to strengthen construction, while high-performance low-emissivity glass filled with krypton helps maintain insulation and allows natural light to fill the interior areas.

Interior Design and User Experience

The interior spaces aim for both function and comfort, utilizing LED lights to enhance the warmth created by the wooden structure and ceiling. This contrast with concrete and steel elements offers a balanced atmosphere. The design encourages a strong connection between indoor spaces and the surrounding landscape. This relationship helps enrich the experience for users, inviting them to engage with both the building and its environment.

Final Design Detail

Construction techniques such as spatial staggering with brace beams foster visual connections between different spaces and the outdoors. This design choice results in an interplay of light and shadow throughout the day, adding depth to the experience for visitors and solidifying the building's place within its picturesque natural setting.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
