The White Hermitage is located in the rural region of Vidzeme, designed as a retreat for personal reflection and community interaction. The setting, surrounded by nature, promotes a sense of calmness and a break from everyday life. The overall design concept focuses on simplicity, allowing individuals to engage with their surroundings and themselves in a meaningful way. This space encourages both communal and solitary experiences, catering to a diverse range of emotional needs.

Concept and Layout

The design emphasizes functionality, creating defined areas for social gatherings and individual reflection. Central to the layout is a common kitchen and dining area, where residents prepare meals together, fostering a family-like atmosphere. The arrangement of spaces clearly separates sacred and everyday activities, allowing for both communal engagement and personal quiet time.

Integration with Nature

The connection to the natural setting is a vital aspect of The White Hermitage. A significant feature is the pirts by the river, where local materials such as birch branches and herbs play an essential role in promoting traditional cleansing rituals. This relationship with nature enhances the overall wellness experience, allowing people to immerse themselves fully in their surroundings.

Light and Materiality

Light serves as a major component in the design, creating an inviting and calming environment. Natural light flows through the corridors and communal spaces, shaping the atmosphere and enriching the user experience. White concrete is used to achieve a clean and simple look, providing a neutral background. Oak wood is incorporated as well, adding warmth and texture that enhances the overall sensory experience for visitors.

Meditative Spaces

Intentional spaces for meditation are integrated into the design, positioned to take advantage of sunlight at different times of day. These areas encourage users to participate in mindful practices, contributing to their overall well-being. Each space is designed to support both individual thought and shared experiences, with the attic serving as a quiet retreat where the sounds of nature create a soothing backdrop.

At The White Hermitage, different architectural elements come together with the natural landscape, creating a place of calm and reflection.
